Women empowerment and schools in recycled plastics in Ivory Coast, UNICEF

Children in Ivory Coast suffer of a high rate of school dropout, further compounded by the absence of adequate schooling structures. In addition, there are significant health and environmental issues, due to diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea affecting millions of children and tons of not recycled plastic waste.
Through this project, UNICEF Ivory Coast aims to create a women-driven recycling market that will transform plastic waste into sustainable building bricks. The recycling of plastic waste promotes the professional integration of women and allows the production of safe and low-cost materials to build new classrooms and schools for children’s education.

Girls outside their ‘Musiqati’ class in a UNICEF Makani Centre in Azraq Refugee Camp.

UNICEF’s child-friendly Makani (which translates as ‘My Space’) centres provide an integrated set of services to children in refugee camps and informal settlements, including learning support, community-based child protection, early childhood development, adolescent and youth participation, life skills and innovation labs. In Azraq and Za’atari Refugee Camps (Jordan), there are 22 Makani centres serving nearly 20,000 children.

UNICEF’s new musical therapy programme “Musiqati” in Makani centres is helping Syrian refugee children to heal and teach them musical communication techniques to contribute to the strengthening of social cohesion among children and their families.
Music therapy provides a safe space for children to be creative and share their emotions through words, harmonies, rhythm and melodies. In the programme, children learn free expression and group communication through solos, duets, trios and groups. It also enhances their decision making abilities.

UNICEF Ambassador, Jordanian pianist and composer Zade Dirani supports Musiqati in Makani centres. After playing with children, he explains: “Evidence shows that music therapy is of great benefit to children in Makani centres. It is wonderful to see boys and girls laughing, playing music and just being children again. Musiqati’s goal is to provide a music therapy model that is both effective and sustainable and can reach thousands of vulnerable Syrian children in Jordan with the healing power of music. We don’t want to stop here. This programme could help children all over the world who have been traumatized by conflict, loss and displacement.”

Street and slum children are the most deprived and under-privileged members of our society. They lack proper food, accommodation and education. Action for Children in Conflict (AfCiC)  with support from the “Carano 4 Children” foundation seeks to change this narrative by breaking this vicious cycle of poverty through harnessing the skills and knowledge that the children have. AfCiC will work with “Carano 4 Children” to promote science, art and music project that will facilitate the transformation of the community by empowering the children with skills in photography, art, theater, dance and storytelling. The project will use Leonardo 4 Children’s experience with the Leonardo Da Vinci fables to promote children’s creativity using African fables. Science will be applied with a view of improving access to water, managing the scarce water available and reducing water wash and water-borne diseases.  Using science and technology the children will help to keep a clean environment, recycle as a way of improving the living standards and welfare. The project is participatory and led by the children: their perspectives are the foundation of sustainability and long-term elimination of poverty. Pianoterra Foundation promotes culture as an instrument of emancipation of people living in marginalized and difficult contexts. Through its projects, the Foundation supports mainly mothers, children and teenagers, creating synergies with other organizations in Italy and worldwide.

Support to children in schools in suburban areas via art and music, in cooperation with MUS-E Italy

Amount donated: € 1200.00
Purpose: support the development of children via art & science in the suburbs of Turin
Event: concerts in Turin, June 2019, September 2020
Beneficiary: MUS-E Italy
Partners: Foundation Yehudi Menuhin, Conservatory of Turin, Cantabile, Coro Politecnico di Torino, Scuola di danza Cirié

The MUS-E initiative was created by Yehudi Menuhin in 1993. It is based on the idea that music and arts should be part and parcel of daily education and accessible to all.
In its present form, MUS-E is targeted at primary schools which are facing the challenge of educating a growing multicultural group of children, many of whom come from migrant or disadvantaged families and are at risk of social exclusion or other societal problems. In the presence of classroom teachers, professional artists actively engaged in MUS-E introduce and share various forms of art (singing, dance, music, movement, drama, visual and multimedia arts, etc.). Thanks to this collective work, the MUS-E program encourages dialogue and togetherness, while awakening children’s sense of creativity, empathy and resilience.
